Richard Dominates Rams In Complete-Game Shutout
April 26, 2013
CINCINNATI - Senior pitcher Jon Richard threw a complete-game three-hit shutout propelling Xavier (22-18, 9-4 A-10) to a 2-0 win over Rhode Island (24-18, 9-4 A-10). Only five Rams reached base against Richard, who gave up three hits and walked two batters.
The game was a pitcher's duel the whole way, with both Richard and Rhode Island starter Mike Bradstreet going the distance. Richard surrendered a pair of singles in the third inning and a hit and walk in the fourth, but did not allow the Rams to advance past second in either inning.
Bradstreet was equally impressive through the first three innings, but ran into Derek Hasenbeck with one out in the fourth. Hasenbeck drilled the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his team-leading third home run of the season.
Xavier tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Stephen Schoettmer doubled to left field and was moved to third on a sac bunt by Selby Chidemo. With the infield pulled in to prevent the run, Mark Elwell hit a slow roller up the middle and beat the throw from URI's shortstop. Schoettmer scored on Elwell's infield single to put XU ahead, 2-0.
Richard improved to 7-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.64. Richard also had stretches in the game where he retired 11- and eight-straight batters. Bradstreet dropped to 6-4 on the season.
Game two of the series will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Xavier's Hayden Field.
