PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After two high scoring games on Friday and Saturday, the Xavier baseball team was able to hold on for the 6-5 win over conference foe Temple Sunday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. With the win, the Musketeers take the series, 2-1, and currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 conference standings.
Four Musketeers had multiple-hit games, including senior Adam Pasono who went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Jordan Conley also went 2-for-3 with a run scored in addition to picking up the save, his fifth, after tossing two innings to close out the game for XU on the mound.
Xavier (23-16, 10-8 A-10) got its offense going in the second inning as sophomore Ben Thomas led off the frame with a solo shot down the left line, his team-leading 10th home run of the season. Conley doubled and moved around to third on a junior Zac Richard ground out. Sophomore John McCambridge collected an RBI as he singled Conley in and then stole two bases to get to third. Pasono was up next and he blasted a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the year, to give XU the 4-0 lead.
Temple (16-22, 10-7 A-10) put up a run in the fourth on an Obal single and then two more in the fifth on a two-RBI single from Jusino to cut into the Musketeer lead, 4-3.
The Musketeers go a run back in the seventh as senior Billy O'Conner's sacrifice fly plated McCambridge but the Owls answered in the eighth when consecutive singles sent home a run for Temple. After eight complete, XU still held the narrow 5-4 advantage.
In the top of the ninth, Pasono led off with a walk and O'Conner moved him over with a sac bunt. A single by senior Neil Lindgren got Pasono to the hot corner but an error on the left fielder allowed him to score, setting the tally at 6-4 in favor of the Musketeers.
The Owls would not go without a fight, as Jusino doubled in a runner from first with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner in scoring position, the XU defense stepped up, putting the next batter out at first to end the game. Xavier took the 6-5 victory to win the series, 2-1.
Freshman Josh Deeg (3-2) got the win for the Musketeers in 2.1 innings of relief. He gave up one earned run on three hits and fanned two while walking one. Conley tossed two innings and picked up his fifth save of the season, the 15th of his career to move him into second place on Xavier's all-time career saves list. Starter freshman Nathan Mutsch threw 4.2 innings giving up three runs on six hits.
Thomas (3-3) took the loss for the Owls after putting in seven innings of work. He gave up five runs on seven hits and struck out four while walking three.
The Musketeers return home on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with crosstown rival Cincinnati. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field and admission is free.
