CINCINNATI - Holding a three-run deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Xavier baseball team put up three runs to send its contest with Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure into extra innings. The Musketeers pulled out the come-from-behind victory with a walk off single to the Bonnies' pitcher, 6-5, as junior Billy O'Conner scored the winning run.

Junior Jordan Conley was an astonishing 5-for-5 at the plate with three singles, two doubles and a sacrifice fly and scored one run while tallying two RBIs. Conley also got his first win of the year from the mound as he moved over from shortstop in the 12th inning for the Musketeers.

Xavier (17-23, 11-5 A-10) put up the first run of the game in the first inning after sophomore Drew Schmidt singled to left and then advanced to third on a single from classmate Zac Richard. Conley was up next and his single to right field scored Schmidt. XU took the early 1-0 lead into the second.

St. Bonaventure (20-17, 9-7 A-10) got a run back in the third to tie the game at one run apiece. The Bonnies went on to score a run each in the fourth and fifth as well before getting two more in the eighth. SBU held the four-run advantage, 5-1, heading into the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the eighth, Conley singled up the middle followed by a single from junior Billy O'Conner. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Conley scored on a ground out by freshman Phil Bauer to cut into the SBU lead, 5-2.

Junior Adam Pasono started off the ninth for Xavier by taking a base after being hit by a pitch and went to second when Schmidt was subsequently hit as well. Junior Steve Brown doubled to right center, scoring Pasono, and Freking singled through the right side to score Schmidt. Conley flied out to center field, enabling Brown to score the tying run. The inning ended with the two teams knotted at five runs each.

The 10th and 11th innings went by with neither team able to score and St. Bona threatened in the 12th with back-to-back singles. But Randy Moley struck out swinging and Brandon Salerno hit into a double play to end the frame.

Conley led off the 12th with a double to center but was put out on the next play as O'Conner reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw. O'Conner was able to steal third and junior Sean Farrell was intentionally walked to put runners on first and third. Pasono popped the ball straight up but it fell into "no man's land" after some confusion in the infield, allowing O'Conner to score the game-winning run for the Musketeers.

Conley (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after relieving senior Mike Creevy in the 12th. Creevy put in 4.0 innings of middle relief in the contest, striking out three while walking none. Starter junior Charlie Leesman threw seven complete innings and struck out three batters while walking one.

Aron Meindl (1-1) took the loss for the Bonnies after entering the game in the 11th inning for SBU. Starter Michael Proctor threw 6.1 innings while striking out six and walking none.

The Musketeers and Bonnies play the second game of their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
