CINCINNATI -- Xavier used aggressive base running and a solid outing from starting pitcher Scott Klever to defeat cross-town rival Cincinnati 4-1 Tuesday at Hayden Field. The Musketeers moved to 19-23 on the year with the win while the Bearcats fell to 13-28. The two teams meet again Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at UC's Marge Schott Stadium.
Klever went six innings, giving up just five hits and one run in the win. Freshman Adam Hall added two innings of relief, fanning four Bearcat batters; and junior Seth Willoughby closed the game in the top of the ninth.
The Musketeers jumped out early by taking advantage of a Patrick Paligraf walk to lead off the game. Freshman designated hitter Derek Hasenbeck's one-out double brought Paligraf home, and Seth Dawes' two-out single plated Hasenbeck to give XU a 2-0 lead.
Mark Elwell kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off infield single and came home thanks to a RBI single through the middle by Paligraf.
Elwell gave the Musketeers some insurance in the bottom of the eighth when he laid down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt on a squeeze play that brought home Daniel Rod for the fourth run of the game.
Xavier was aggressive on the base pads as Tres Eberhardt, Dawes, and Elwell each stole a base. Elwell finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run.
Brad Mergen fell to 0-4 as he was tagged with the loss in seven innings of action. The Bearcat lefty posted a career-high seven strikeouts in the loss.
The Musketeers will look to sweep the Bearcats on the season Wednesday as the two teams meet at Marge Schott Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
