CINCINNATI - Xavier built an early lead and held on to defeat Northern Kentucky, 6-3, at Hayden Field on Wednesday afternoon. The win improves Xavier's record to 22-18, while NKU drops to 12-26 on the year.
"It all starts with pitching and we got a great effort from Eric [Stiene]," said head coach Scott Googins. "We've got a resilient group that responded well from Tuesday's game. The bats came through and we made a few defensive plays to help us out."
Brian Bruening opened the third with a single and Rizzie drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one down. An RBI single from Andre Jernigan delivered the first run and, following a Bo Slemons' walk to load the bags, Rizzie scored on a wild pitch to extend XU's lead to 3-0.
Rizzie added his second double of the day in the fourth, driving in Bruening in the fourth. Forney delivered his second RBI of the day with a single to plate Rizzie.
NKU finally broke through with a run in the fifth. Jordan Procyshen delivered an RBI single through the right side. The Norse threatened again in the seventh, but a spectacular double-play that went from Slemons to Jernigan to Sean Cambell covering at first thwarted the threat to hang on to a 5-1 advantage.
The Musketeers tallied one more run in the seventh when David Morton doubled home Jernigan, giving Xavier the 6-1 lead. NKU pushed a late rally with two runs in the ninth, but could not catch Xavier and lost the second half of the home-and-home series, 6-3.
Eric Stiene earned the start on the mound. The sophomore hurler allowed one run on seven hits and a pair of walks in five innings, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Bruening closed the day going 4-for-5 at the dish, scoring two runs in the process. Rizzie went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Forney finished with two hits and two RBIs and Jernigan closed the game with a pair of hits, an RBI and run scored.
Xavier will be back in action Tuesday, April 29, as the team has a bye week in BIG EAST play. The Musketeers will travel to Wright State for a 6:30 p.m. meeting.
