CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball was shutout for just the second times this season in a 9-0 loss to Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field. XU has now lost three straight-games, following a seven-game winning streak, to fall to 21-18 on the season. The victory improves BG to 14-20.
After allowing a run in the opening inning to the Falcons, the Musketeers cruised through the second and third innings. The wheels then fell off for Xavier in the fourth inning. BGSU sent 11 runners to the plate and scored six runs in the frame to blow the game wide open.
The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the top half of the ninth inning on a home run to push the final score to 9-0.
Xavier couldn't get going offensively. The Musketeers finished the game with five hits, two from Daniel Rizzie, and five walks, but were unable to come up with clutch hits when runners were on base.
Vinny Nittoli (2-2) took the loss for XU, allowing seven runs on seven hits in three and a third innings. Two of the Nittoli's runs were unearned due to two Musketeer errors.
The Atlantic 10 Conference's leading offense has only been held scoreless one other time this season, a 7-0 loss at No. 4 Louisville.
Brett Fitzwater (2-2) earned the victory after working five innings, giving up five hits and three walks.
The Musketeers return to play in the A-10 when Rhode Island comes to town for a weekend series beginning this Friday at 3 p.m. All three games this weekend are going to be streamed live on GoXavier.com.
