Home Bats Of NKU Leave Xavier Behind On The Road, 17-8
April 22, 2014
CINCINNATI - The Xavier Musketeers (21-18) grabbed an early lead in the first, but failed to answer the Northern Kentucky (12-25) offense and dropped game one of the home-and-home series, 17-8.
Neither team wasted any time getting on the board. Xavier struck first when Patrick Jones singled to center field to bring home Daniel Rizzie and Joe Forney, giving XU the lead, 2-0. NKU answered with one swing from Cole Bauml that just made it over the right field fence and scored two runs for the Norse.
Trent Astle found himself in a bases loaded jam early in the second inning and walked Bauml to score another run. NKU added five more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jordan Procyshen, to take the lead, 8-2. Back-to-back doubles by Bauml and Logan Spurlin in the third brought home two more runners.
XU did not go away quietly. Jones found himself at third with some nice base running and came across the plate when Stephen Schoettmer hit a slow roller to the shortstop, just beating the throw.
After NKU had a two-run fourth, Xavier responded early in the fifth inning. Brian Bruening led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on a Joe Forney ground ball. Rizzie found a gap in right center and doubled to drive in Derek Hasenbeck from third. The Musketeers cut the lead to six, 12-6, after Andre Jernigan scorched a ball up the middle to score Rizzie from second.
Back-and-forth action over the next three innings saw two runs for XU and five for NKU. Xavier could not come closer than six runs of the Norse and lost the first game of the home-and-home series, 17-8.
Offense was no stranger to either side in Tuesday's game. Jones finished the day with three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Jernigan had a pair of RBIs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Rizzie scored two runs and drove in one runner in four at-bats.
Xavier starter Astle struggled early on and pitched 1.1 innings, giving up six earned runs. The Musketeers used five different relievers, but Daniel Przeniczny pitched the most of any XU pitcher with three innings, striking out three batters.
Garrett Schrantz held the early lead for NKU and pitched four innings of four-hit ball. Cody Cooper closed out the game with four innings of his own, allowing two runs on five hits.
NKU recorded a season-high 21 hits in Tuesday's matchup. Dominic Faron and Bauml each had four hits for the Norse. Bauml recorded seven RBIs in the game. Four other batters had multi-hit games for the Norse.
These two teams are back in action Wednesday afternoon for the second half of the home-and-home series. First pitch at Hayden Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. GoXavier.com will be providing live statistics for the game.
