AMHERST, Mass. -- The Xavier baseball team took the first two games of a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Massachusetts by winning both games of Friday's double-header. The Musketeers rallied to win the first game 8-7 in 10 innings and in the second game the Musketeers defeated the Minutemen 9-2.
With the wins, Xavier improved to 20-18 overall and 5-6 in the Atlantic 10. Sophomore Markus Kuykendoll improved to 2-3 this season as he earned the win in three innings of relief action in game one. In the second game, sophomore Jon Richard improved to 3-3 with his win in game two. Richard pitched seven innings and gave up just two earned runs in the second game.
Thanks to an RBI single by redshirt-sophomore Mark Elwell in the top of the 10th inning that plated freshman right fielder Brian Bruening Xavier earned an 8-7 win over Massachusetts in the first game of Friday's double-header.
In game one the Minutemen jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the third. Xavier tied the game at 5-5 with a 3-RBI double by senior first baseman Ben Thomas in the top of the fifth inning.
The Minutemen scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Xavier tied the game again in the top of the eighth with two runs of its own. Elwell's RBI single in the top of the 10th gave XU a one-run lead and Seth Willoughby closed out the game to earn his eighth save of the season.
In game two Willoughby went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and a home run to lead the Musketeers to their second win of the day.
In the top of the sixth Willoughby blasted a three-run bomb to left field as part of a five-run performance by XU in the inning.
The Musketeers and Minutemen close out the series Saturday April 23, at 1 p.m.
