AKRON, Ohio - The Xavier (20-15) baseball team extended its winning streak to six in a row with an 11-3 win at Akron (8-26) on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the longest winning streak of the season for XU, which has also won nine of its last ten contests.
The Musketeers scored one run in the first and second innings, five runs in the third and four in the fourth. Selby Chidemo led the charge with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in four RBIs. Bo Slemons was the beneficiary of Chidemo's clutch hitting, scoring three times off of Chidemo's hits.
Derek Hasenbeck and Jacob Bodner both registered two RBIs in the game, while Patrick Paligraf, Joe Forney and Vinny Nittoli each scored two runs. Stephen Schoettmer also scored a run, but went hitless to halt his hitting streak at 16 games. In addition to scoring twice, Forney also picked up two hits and improved his hitting streak to 12-consecutive games.
Nittoli (2-1) also started on the mound for Xavier and allowed three runs on six hits and six walks with four strikeouts in six innings. Eric Stiene tossed the final three innings in near perfection. The only blemish was a hit batter with one out in the ninth, but Stiene struck out the side to close the game and earn the first save of his career.
Xavier returns back to Atlantic 10 action with a three-game series against Charlotte at Hayden Field beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The Musketeers currently sit second in the conference with a 7-2 record and the 49ers enter just one game back at 6-3.
