Three-Run Homers in the Seventh and Eighth Deny Fordham Comeback; XU Wins, 10-7
April 17, 2009
CINCINNATI - Sophomore Ben Thomas hit his fourth three-run homer of the season in the seventh to tie the game and senior Adam Pasono followed in the eighth with a three-run blast of his own to give Xavier baseball the final margin, 10-7, over Fordham Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. Saturday's game time has been moved up to 12:00 p.m.
Senior Neil Lindgren hit the first of three three-run shots in the game for the Musketeers in the third inning. Junior Zac Richard was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the day and Pasono tallied three hits as well for the Blue and White.
Xavier (19-13, 7-6 A-10) got ahead of the Rams by four runs after the first four innings. After Lindgren's homer in the third, an RBI single from sophomore John McCambridge put the Musketeers up, 4-0.
Fordham (12-22, 8-5 A-10) would go on to score seven unanswered runs to crawl out of its four-run hole to take a 7-4 advantage after seven and a half innings.
With two outs and two on in the bottom of the frame, Thomas swung on the second pitch he saw sending the ball over the right center fence and off of the wall of O'Conner Sports Center. His three-run long ball evened the game at seven runs apiece.
In the eighth, Pasono's three-run dinger plated McCambridge as well as pinch runner freshman Danny Rinck to score the go ahead runs for XU. Xavier took back the three-run lead, 10-7, which would prove to be the final margin.
Senior Brett Greenwell (2-1) was credited with the win for the Musketeers. He put in two innings in relief of starter junior Danny Rosenbaum. Greenwell struck out four batters while walking none and gave up one earned run on three hits. Rosenbaum tossed the first six innings, striking out seven while walking four. Senior Jordan Conley moved onto the mound from short stop to throw the final inning for XU. He struck out two batters on his way to collecting his third save of the season.
Jordan Grangard (0-1) took the loss for the Rams after giving up three earned runs. He threw 1.1 innings of relief, with no strike outs.
The Musketeers and Rams continue their three-game series Saturday, April 18, at Hayden Field. Game time has been changed to 12:00 p.m.
