CINCINNATI - A two-run homer by Stephen Schoettmer and a grand slam from Vinny Nittoli provided the offensive power in Xavier's 8-4 win over visiting Wright State on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field. The win increased Xavier's winning streak to five games and improved the Musketeers to 19-15, while Wright State dropped to 16-18.

XU manufactured a run in the third inning. Schoettmer drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Michael Moore. Patrick Paligraf singled to drive in the first run of the game.

Schoettmer's blast came just an inning later. Xavier's third baseman lined a two-out shot off of the top of the retaining fence in left field, scoring Daniel Rod to increase the Musketeer's lead to 3-0. The home run was the first of the season for Schoettmer and increased his hitting streak to 16-straight games.

Not to be outdone, Nittoli struck for his grand slam in the fifth inning. Wright State went to the bullpen at the beginning of the inning and the Raiders' Cody Kopilchak had trouble finding the zone. Mark Elwell and Patrick Paligraf walked. Joe Forney was then hit by a pitch to load the bags for Nittoli.

Nittoli was given the green light on a 3-1 count and sent a shot over the left field retaining fence and onto Victory Parkway. It was the second home run of the season for Nittoli and gave XU its 11th homer this season.

The fifth inning continued with a walk by Tres Eberhardt and single by Jake Forrester. Moore singled through the right side to register Xavier's fifth run of the inning and increase the lead to 8-1.

Xavier starting pitcher Scott Klever (3-4) rolled through seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Only one of runs scored by Wright State against Klever was earned. He struck out three batters and walked none.

Sean Campbell worked a perfect eighth inning and Jacob Bodner entered the ninth to close out the game. Bodner gave up a solo home run to the Raiders' Joe Ford, resulting in the 8-4 final score.

Robby Sexton (1-3) suffered the loss for WSU after giving up three runs on four hits in four innings of work. Wright State used five pitchers in the contest, including David Deliz, Logan Blair and Travis Hissong.

Xavier will head North on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. tilt at Akron. Live stats will be provided at www.gozips.com.
