CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team used a five-run sixth to retake the lead for good in its 12-8 win over Cincinnati in the first-day nightcap of the Inaugural Je Nuxhall Classic at UC's Marge Schott Stadium Tuesday night. Two Musketeers had three-hit games in the win.

The Musketeers were led by junior Zac Richard and sophomore John McCambridge with three hits apiece while Richard and sophomore Ben Thomas each scored three runs in the contest.

Xavier (17-13) put up the first run of the game in the second inning as junior Zac Richard doubled to left center and freshman Matt Kleifges singled to put runners on the corners. Sophomore John McCambridge singled through the right side to plate Richard and the Musketeers took the early 1-0 lead.

The Musketeers scored three more in the third all with two outs. Senior Neil Lindgren doubled down the left field line and Thomas followed with a double to left sending Lindgren home. Senior Jordan Conley singled to right, scoring Thomas, and then stole second to get into scoring position. Richard reached on a Bearcat error and Conley crossed the plate to stretch the XU lead to four, 4-0.

Cincinnati (16-16) exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the game. The Bearcats tallied four hits in the inning, all singles, and one costly Musketeer error allowed a run to score as well.

In the top of the fifth frame Xavier answered with two runs to knot the score at six runs apiece. Thomas led off the inning with a double and made it around to score on an RBI-double from Richard. With a runner at second and two outs, McCambridge reached on a Bearcat throwing error and Richard was able to make it home to even the game.

With two outs and the bases loaded, the Bearcats walked in a run for the Musketeers as XU retook the lead. Junior Drew Schmidt was the next Muskie to come home on a wild pitch and Kleifges was walked on four straight pitches, the last of which was wild, enabling Thomas to come across. McCambridge blasted a two-RBI double to the left field corner, plating Richard and Kleifges, as Xavier took a commanding 11-6 lead off the five-run inning.

The Bearcats got two back in the eighth as Cameron Satterwhite sent a two-run shot over the right field fence to cut into the Musketeer lead, 11-8.

McCambridge led off the final inning of the contest with a single to right center and then stole his team-leading 22nd and 23rd bases of the season to make it to the hot corner. Schmidt took off for second with Lindgren at the plate and in the rundown, McCmbridge was able to score from third, as Schmidt was caught stealing on the play. XU stretched its lead back to four, 12-8, which would prove to be the final score.

Senior Brett Greenwell (1-1) got the win for the Musketeers after tossing 4.1 innings of relief. He gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Dan Jensen (2-2) took the loss for the Bearcats. He put in 1.1 innings of work giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out none while walking none.
