CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball beat Villanova, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the victory, Xavier sweeps the series and remains unbeaten in the BIG EAST.
The Musketeers took advantage of a Wildcat miscue on Daniel Rizzie's pop-up behind the pitcher's mound. Rizzie stole second and scored on Brian Bruening's triple to deep left-center. Slemons plated Bruening with a single to spot XU with an early 2-0 advantage.
Bruening tallied another run for Xavier in the fourth after singling to lead off the frame. He worked his way around the bases on a wild pitch and stolen base before scoring on another wild pitch.
Schoettmer tacked on Xavier's fourth run with a one-out solo homerun to left field in the seventh, extending the Musketeers' lead to 4-0.
Bruening led the offensive output with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Xavier's centerfielder scored twice and drove in one run. Slemons and Schoettmer added an RBI each, while Michael Moore and David Morton each knocked doubles in the game.
Vinny Nittoli earned the victory after pitching seven shutout innings. Eight Wildcats reached base on the senior hurler, who ran his season record to 4-2.
Following the contest, 15 members of the baseball team and one athletic trainer shaved their heads to benefit the Vs. Cancer Foundation and a local hospital. The group raised over $11,000 to help fight childhood cancer.
Xavier will make the three-mile trek to face local-foe Cincinnati in a 6:30 p.m. showdown. The team will then resume BIG EAST Conference action against Butler in a three-game series that begins on Thursday.
