Musketeers Claim 3-2 Victory Over Aces
April 13, 2013
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Xavier (17-15) rallied from a two-run deficit midway through the game to earn a gritty 3-2 victory at Evansville (14-22) on Saturday afternoon. Stephen Schoettmer extended his hitting streak to 14 games and paced XU's offense by driving in two runs.
The Musketeers fell behind by a run in the first inning when the Aces' Chris Pearson connected on a solo home run to left field. The deficit grew to two runs in the fifth on Pearson's second RBI of the game, a single to center field.
XU immediately fought back with a pair of runs in the sixth. Joe Forney walked to open the inning and scored on Tres Eberhardt's triple to right center. Eberhardt scored two batters later on an RBI-groundout by Stephen Schoettmer. Xavier loaded the bases with two outs, but was unable to convert on the opportunity.
Forney, Daniel Rizzie and Schoettmer converted three singles into a run for the Musketeers, putting them ahead for good, 3-2.
Mark Elwell led XU with three hits, including his ninth double of the season. Forney collected a pair of hits and scored two of the Musketeers' three runs.
Although he did not factor into the decision, Alex Westrick started for Xavier and pitched five innings of two-run baseball. Jacob Bodner allowed one hit with three walks and three strikeouts in two and a two-thirds innings. Bodner won his second game in the matter of four days after picking up the win against Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday to move to 2-1.
After securing the final four outs of the game, Alex Vice registered his second save of the series. Vice, who now has four saves this year, also earned a save in Xavier's 9-7 win yesterday.
Brent Jurceka took the loss for UE, falling to 1-3 on the season. Evansville's starter Kyle Lloyd picked up a no decision after giving up two runs on five hits and six walks. Lloyd also struck out eight batters.
The series between Xavier and Evansville will wrap up at noon (CT) on Sunday at Braun Stadium on Evansville's campus. XU is seeking its third sweep in its last four weekend series. The Musketeers have swept both St. Bonaventure and Dayton, with both series being held at Xavier's Hayden Field.
