Klever Completes A Shutout Of Nova Saturday Afternoon, 5-0
April 12, 2014
CINCINNATI - Scott Klever went the distance and held Villanova to just two hits, shutting out the Wildcats in the victory at Hayden Field Saturday afternoon, 5-0. Xavier (19-14) is still spotless in conference play, 5-0, and Villanova (10-21) dropped to 2-3.
In a complete reversal from Friday's slugfest, both teams were held scoreless through five and a half innings.
It took until the bottom of the sixth for the Musketeers to score the first runs of the game. Brian Bruening sent a double into deep center field scoring Derek Hasenbeck and Vinny Nittoli. XU added one more run in the inning when Andre Jernigan squeezed a ball just fair down the left line to bring home Bruening from second base.
Bruening added two insurance runs in the eight with an inside-the-park home run, sending home Nittoli during the round-tripper.
Klever (5-3) was the star of the game. The senior threw nine innings of two-hit ball in the winning effort. The complete game by Klever was the first for XU this year. He struck as many batters (five) as he allowed to reach base.
Max Almonte (1-3) gets tagged for the loss after surrendering three runs.
Xavier has now won six of its last seven games and seven of nine, while the spotless 5-0 conference record keeps the squad atop the BIG EAST standings.
The Musketeers go for the sweep at home Sunday at noon. Following Sunday's game, 15 members of the team and athletic trainer Jody Jenike will shave their heads as part of a fundraiser with Vs. Cancer, benefiting the foundation and a local hospital. GoXavier.com will provide live video broadcasts and statistics throughout the series.
