CINCINNATI -- The Musketeers tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch by Cincinnati reliever Brian Sand. However, a wild pitch by XU sophomore reliever Seth Willoughby in the bottom of the ninth allowed the the Bearcats to score the winning run and hand XU a 6-5 loss in the second game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic. The Musketeers will face Miami (Ohio) at 3 p.m. at UC's Marge Schott Stadium.
Xavier (18-17) senior starting pitcher Brian Muransky struck out six Bearcats in five innings of action. Willoughby was tagged with the loss and fell to 1-3 in two-thirds of an inning.
Cincinnati (16-14) starter Thomas Gentile pitched pitched seven innings and gave up four runs in the no-decision. Sand earned the win in one inning of play to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The Musketeers scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Senior catcher Ryan Bellamy led off the inning with the first of his two doubles on the day and crossed the plate on a throwing error by the UC third baseman. Redshirt sophomore center fielder drove in Willoughby with an RBI single for the second run of the inning.
The Bearcats battled back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs of their own. UC took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a run on an RBI single by Justin Glass.
XU tied it in the top of the ninth but an errant pitch by Willoughby allowed the Bearcats to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
