CINCINNATI - Despite freshman Steve Brown going 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the afternoon, Xavier lost a tough non-conference match-up to visiting Indiana on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Hoosiers capitalized on 14 hits and six walks to get past the Musketeers by a score of 10-6. With the defeat, XU now stands at 10-24 on the season, while IU improves to 10-18 overall.
Xavier lit up the scoreboard first as Neil Lindgren drew the leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first. After a wild pitch and a throwing error advance the freshman to third, Collin Salzenstein drove a ball deep to left field to earn the sacrifice fly and plate Lindgren for the first run of the contest.
IU would answer with two runs in the top of the second to take the 2-1 advantage but the Musketeers would knot the score at 2-2 after another sacrifice fly. Lindgren would deliver the sac fly this time that allowed classmate Richard Bautista to cross the plate and restore parity.
The Hoosiers would not go away however and answered with another run in the top of the fourth, as an errant throw would allow the IU runner to cross the plate. Xavier responded to the IU top half with its largest inning of the contest as the Musketeers pushed three across in the stanza. Back-to-back singles by Andy Zellers and Chris Lozan placed runners on first and second with no outs before a walk by Matt Waskerwitz loaded the bases with two outs. Another back-to-back single barrage by freshmen Bautista and Brown would allow all three of the XU runs to cross and put the Musketeers ahead 5-3.
Indiana would keep its big inning until the top of the seventh when IU put up a five-spot to grab the lead for good. The Hoosiers would plate five runs on five hits in the inning and notched four straight hits in the inning at one point.
Brown led the Musketeers at the plate with his 2-for-4 performance and career-high three RBIs. Classmate Bautista finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Robbie Kelley and Lozan also tallied hits in the ballgame. Lindgren and Salzenstein each had an RBI in the game and junior Andy Zellers finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
Xavier used five pitchers on the day with freshman Brett Greenwell taking the loss. Senior Steve Sakosits got the nod on the hill and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in his four innings of work. Freshman Charlie Leesman and sophomore David Hartman each provided an inning of relief with each allowing one run on two hits in their outings.
The Musketeers will return to the diamond on Friday afternoon as Xavier prepares for another Atlantic 10 weekend. XU will welcome Saint Louis to Hayden Field for a three-game set starting on Friday at 3:00 pm. Xavier's Mike Creevy (2-6, 5.66 ERA) will take the hill against SLU's Dave Sever (3-2, 4.61 ERA).
