OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami (Ohio) scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to spoil Xavier starter Scott Klever's shutout outing and hand the Musketeers a 1-0 loss in the second game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic. With the loss, Xavier fell to 13-19 while Miami improved to 17-15. Xavier faces local rival Cincinnati tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Klever went 6.1 innings, gave up four hits, and struck out six MU batters in the loss. Freshman lefty Alex Westrick added 1.2 innings of relief.
Tres Eberhardt led off the top of the fourth with a base hit that careened off the glove of the MU second baseman. The XU sophomore moved to second on a ground out by Mitch Elliott. However, Zubrod struck out the next two XU batters to end the Xavier threat.
Matt Honchel picked up Miami's first base hit with a one-out single to short in the bottom of the fourth. Honchel almost picked up the RedHawks' first run but Michael Moore's head's up pickup of a loose ball and a bullet throw to catcher Joey Noble saved the run and ended the inning.
After giving up two hits in the bottom of the fourth, Klever came into the bottom of the fifth and fanned three straight Miami batters.
Xavier threatened again in the top of the seventh when Paligraf reached on a one-out walk and moved to third on a Miami error. However, MU reliever Brandon Adkins got Eberhardt to strike out to end the inning and strand the XU runners.
Miami took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Honchel crossed the plate on a Brandon Wolf pinch-hit RBI ground out.
Mark Elwell led off the top of the ninth with a single through the middle. He made it to second via a sac bunt by Paligraf, and moved to third on a groundout by Brian Bruening but a fly ball to right field by Derek Hasenbeck stranded the tying run and sealed Xavier loss.
Wednesday's game will be broadcast on RealTalk 1160 a.m.
