RICHMOND, Va. -- Xavier took two out of three games at Richmond with a 7-5 win in 10 innings Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 13-18 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10. Freshman Adam Hall picked up his second career save with a strong relief appearance in the 10th inning.
The Spiders got to XU closer Seth Willoughby in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run home run that tied the game at five. Willoughby managed to pitch out of a jam when he struck out Adam Flanagan with runners on first and second.
XU battled back in the top of the 10th as Mitch Elliott led off the inning with a single through the middle and moved to second on a great sacrifice bunt by Joey Noble. Sophomore Michael Moore continued his streak of clutch hitting with a single that moved Elliot to third and Mark Elwell brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice bunt on a squeeze play.
Patrick Paligraf added some insurance with a two-out RBI single to center that brought home Moore.
Hall came in to pitch in the bottom of the 10th and got the first two Spider batters to ground out. After giving up a two out single, Hall got UR right fielder Phil Ruzbarsky to strike out swinging to seal the win for Xavier.
Starting redshirt-junior Tyler Koors pitched six innings and gave up three runs and six hits in a non-decision. Alex Vice added two-thirds of an inning and Willoughby posted 2.1 innings of work in the XU and earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Xavier got off to a hot start with three runs in the top of the first inning. Paligraf led off the game with a single up the middle and advanced to second base on a walk to Derek Hasenbeck. That set up an RBI single by Selby Chidemo to put the Musketeers on the board. Elliott brought home Hasenbeck and Chidemo with a two-out single to left center that gave XU a 3-0 lead.
The Musketeers added two more in the top of the second when Brian Bruening hit a two-out single that set up an RBI triple by Hasenbeck. Sophomore Tres Eberhardt brought Hasenbeck home with a single down the right field line to give XU a 5-0 lead.
Richmond held XU scoreless through the next seven innings while adding two runs of its own in the bottom of the third and a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull within two.
The Musketeers will have a busy week as they head to Oxford, Ohio for game against local foe Miami (Ohio) in the first game of the annual Joe Nuxall Classic. The Musketeers face the RedHawks Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. before facing either Wright State or Cincinnati Wednesday.
