Paligraf's Walk-Off RBI Gives XU Extra-Inning Win Over UD
April 6, 2013
CINCINNATI - Xavier (13-14, 6-2 A-10) used a dramatic walk-off squeeze bunt by Patrick Paligraf in the bottom of the 11th to defeat Dayton (7-18-1, 2-6 A-10), 4-3. The win gives the Musketeers their second Atlantic 10 series victory of the season.
Stephen Schoettmer led off the 11th inning with a walk and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt by the pitcher. Selby Chidemo put down a sac bunt to move Schoettmer to third. Dayton's pitcher, Denton Sunderman, hit Mark Elwell to put runners on the corners, setting up Paligraf's squeeze bunt and game winning run by Schoettmer.
Dayton used a pair of singles to put runners on the corners in the first inning and scored on an errant Xavier throw that came while trying to turn a double play.
Schoettmer blasted a double off of the wall in left center and Chidemo singled through the left side to move Schoettmer to third. Dayton's left fielder fumbled the ball, allowing Schoettmer to score on the error and tie the game at one.
The Flyers added a run in both the sixth and seventh inning to set up Xavier's comeback bid. Daniel Rizzie tripled off the left field wall to score Tres Eberhardt in the bottom half of the seventh, pulling Xavier within one, 3-2.
After leaving the bases loaded in the eighth, Xavier loaded the bags again in the ninth. This time the Musketeers converted the opportunity. Chidemo grounded to shortstop, whose flip to second pulled the second baseman off the bag and negated a double-play opportunity for UD. Chidemo reached on the fielder's choice and Mitch Elliott crossed as the tying run to set up the 11th inning walk-off.
Alex Westrick tossed 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. The sophomore hurler struck out five Flyers and issued just two walks. Alex Vice tossed 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win, improving to 1-1 on the season. Vice fanned three Flyers and allowed just two hits.
Sagerman suffered the loss for UD, falling to 2-2 on the season. Dayton's reliever did not give up a hit, but walked four Musketeers and hit two more with pitches. Noah Buettgen started on the mound for Dayton and pitched eight innings. Buettgen allowed one earned run on six hits.
Xavier looks to close the series with Dayton in the series finale at noon on Sunday at Xavier's Hayden Field.
