ATHENS, Ohio -- Behind six innings of strong pitching by redshirt senior Brian Muransky and eight total hits by the Xavier offense, the Musketeers earned a 7-5 win over Ohio University Wednesday night. With the win the Musketeers improved to 17-14 overall on the season.
The Bobcats held a 5-1 lead after five innings but the Musketeers proved to be up to the challenge.
Xavier cut the Ohio lead to 5-4 in the top of the sixth. Redshirt sophomore Mark Elwell earned an RBI on a fielder's choice that brought home senior Phil Bauer. Freshman first baseman Brian Bruening scored on a fielding error by the Bobcat first baseman.
The Musketeers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning with three more runs. Senior center fielder John McCambridge reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning. Fellow senior Ben Thomas doubled down the left field line to bring McCambridge home. Xavier scored twice more to seal the win.
Muransky earned the win in six innings of work and gave up seven hits and four earned runs. Sophomore Seth Willoughby earned his seventh save of the year in one inning of action.
Xavier returns to action Friday as they host Atlantic 10 rival Richmond in the first of a three game series. Friday's first pitch from Hayden Field is set for 3 p.m.
