April 3, 2012
CINCINNATI-- A three-run home run by Wright State's Tristan Moore in the seventh inning proved to be the deciding factor as the Raiders defeated Xavier 5-2 in non-conference action Tuesday at Hayden Field. With the loss, Xavier fell to 11-17 on the season while Wright State improved to 16-10.
Scott Klever was pegged with the loss in one inning of action. Freshman Adam Hall went five innings in his third start, which went down as a no-decision. The XU freshman pitched five shutout innings and gave up seven hits.
In the bottom of the fifth, first baseman Seth Dawes singled to lead off the inning but was the victim of a 5-4 putout as catcher Jake Forrester reached on a fielder's choice. Mark Elwell brought home Forrester with a single but was tagged out at second as he tried to take second base. Patrick Paligraf and Tres Eberhardthit back-to-back singles but were stranded to end the inning with Xavier leading 1-0.
The Raiders tied the game in the sixth inning on a RBI double and Moore's three-run homer in the seventh opened up the WSU lead to 4-1.
Dawes blasted his first career home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh to cut the WSU lead to 4-2. Wright State's Jake Hibbard answered with a one-out solo home run to take a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth.
Xavier threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Derek Hasenbeckled off with a pinch-hit single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Jack Van Horn. WSU closer Michael Schum came on to face and retire Paligraf and Eberhardt to hand XU its second straight loss.
The Musketeers return to Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series at Richmond beginning Friday at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at GoXavier.com.
