ATHENS, Ohio - Xavier (11-13) scored in double-figures for its fifth time in the last seven games in a 15-10 rout of Ohio (5-22). Patrick Paligraf registered six RBIs on two hits to pace the Musketeers' offense.
The Bobcats put up two runs in the opening frame, but the Musketeers responded with five run innings in both the second and third and one run in the fourth to stake an 11-2 lead. Paligraf led the charge with six RBIs and Stephen Schoettmer and Selby Chidemo each drove in two runs during the scoring onslaught.
Ohio picked up four runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut Xavier's lead to 11-6. However, Schoettmer answered with two more RBIs in the top of the sixth on a triple to deep center field. The triple is Schoettmer's third of the season and provided him with his third and fourth RBIs of the game. The Bobcats got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the sixth, but Xavier still led, 13-7.
Chidemo and Mark Elwell added RBI singles in the eighth inning to push Xavier's lead to 15-7. The RBI for Chidemo was his third of the contest, giving the Musketeers three hitters with at least three RBIs. OU matched XU with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the stanza and tacked on one more run in the ninth to provide the final margin.
Xavier received timely hitting at the plate from several other Musketeers. Seth Dawes went 3-for-4 with two walks at the plate and scored four runs. Jake Forrester chipped in three hits and scored three times. Joe Forney, who scored three times, was the third Musketeers with at least three hits.
Starting pitcher Vinny Nittoli surrendered just the two runs in four innings of work to earn the victory and improved to 1-1. Nittoli struck out two Bobcats and walked one. Pitching two innings of relief, Zach Johnson allowed five runs on six hits. Daniel Przeniczny gave up two runs in his two innings on the mound and Ohio scored one run off of Sean Campbell in the ninth.
The Musketeers registered double-figure scoring in all three games against St. Bonaventure to open play in the A-10. XU also put up 14 runs in game two of the series against Saint Louis this past weekend, meaning tonight's 15-run effort gave Xavier its fifth double-digit scoring output in the last seven games.
Eight different pitchers appeared for the Bobcats and Marck Paliotto was charged with the loss. Paliotto fell to 1-6 on the season after giving up five runs on four hits in just one inning.
Xavier plays host to No. 17/16 Indiana at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers defeated the Hoosiers, 11-3, in Bloomington, Ind., last season. Scott Klever tossed six innings of three-run ball to earn the victory and Daniel Rod drove in two runs to lead XU's offense.
