CINCINNATI-- Xavier was looking for the three-game sweep of Charlotte Sunday but the 49ers managed to hold off a determined Musketeer squad and handed XU a 6-5 defeat. With the loss, Xavier fell to 11-16 on the season and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers improved to 14-14 overall and 2-4 in A-10 play.
Tyler Koors fell to 1-4 on the season as he was tagged with the loss in five innings of action. Freshman Alex Westrick added two innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts. Juniors Alex Vice and Seth Willoughbyeach added a shutout inning of relief.
Charlotte jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and added another run in the top of the fourth. Xavier pulled within one (3-2) in the bottom of the fourth on two clutch two-out RBI singles by Mark Elwell and Patrick Paligraf.
Charlotte added three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead but the Musketeers battled to close within one yet again in the bottom of the inning. Elwell blasted a RBI double to left field to bring home sophomore right fielder Brian Bruening. Daniel Rod's two-out two-RBI single plated Michael Mooreand Elwell to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
Elwell finished the game 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
However, the Charlotte defense held firm as Xavier threatened in the seventh, eighth, and ninth but could not retake the lead.
The Musketeers will be back in action at home Tuesday as they host Wright State. First pitch from Hayden Field is set for 3 p.m.
