ST. LOUIS - Xavier (10-13, 4-2 A-10) closed out its series at Saint Louis (18-10, 5-1 A-10) with an 11-1 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Musketeers were limited to just one run and four hits less than 24 hours after the team registered 14 runs on 17 hits.
The Billikens scored one run in the bottom of the first to open the scoring, but the Musketeers evened the score in the top of the third. Daniel Rizzie doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The freshman catcher scored on Stephen Schoettmer's ground out to short.
Saint Louis broke the game open with a five-run fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Mike Vigliarolo. SLU added two more runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to reach the final 10-run margin.
Xavier's starter Tyler Koors (2-3) worked into the seventh inning and was charged with six earned runs on 12 hits. Scott Klever pitched 1.2 innings for the Musketeers, surrendering three runs on two hits to the Billikens. Jacob Bodner gave up one hit before recording the final out for XU.
Saint Louis starter Clay Smith (4-2) earned the victory after going the distance on the mound. Smith gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Xavier returns home to celebrate Easter and prepare for a pair of midweek contests. The Musketeers will travel to Athens, Ohio for a 6 p.m. meeting with Ohio on Tuesday. Then, XU will host No. 24/19 Indiana at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Hayden Field on Xavier's campus.
