March 29, 2014
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The Xavier Musketeers came back from a 3-0 deficit and put up seven runs in the fifth to put away fellow BIG EAST member Butler in a neutral field, non-conference matchup Saturday, 9-3. Xavier (13-12) snapped its five-game losing streak and returned to over .500 for the year. Butler dropped to 10-14 after the loss.
Butler used a two-out rally to notch the first runs of the game. Ryan Wojciechowski scored after Nick Bartolone found an opening along the right-field line and ran it out for a triple. BU took advantage of Bartolone's triple by knocking him in with the next batter and took a two-run lead, 2-0. The Bulldogs added one more run in the third on a balk by Scott Klever to build the lead to three.
Xavier, held to just one hit in the first four innings, came alive at the plate in the fifth. After putting runners on second and third, XU scored its first run of the game on a balk by Jeff Schank, bringing home Jake Forrester from third. During the same at-bat, Bo Slemons singled into center field and Stephen Schoettmer came home to score.
The Musketeers took the lead, 4-3, after Derek Hasenbeck singled to center field and drove in two runs, but scored another after Butler committed a throwing error that sent Joe Forney home. The rally kept going when Vinny Nittoli doubled down the right-field line and scored Hasenbeck from second. One more run driven in by Andre Jernigan gave XU its biggest lead of the game, 7-3.
The Musketeers added insurance runs thanks to Brian Bruening knocking in Chase Puente from second in the seventh and Daniel Rizzie doubling in Forrester in the eighth to seal the game, 9-3.
Forrester had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Bruening had a two-hit Saturday with one RBI. Slemons and Hasenbeck each had one hit, one run and one RBI.
Scott Klever (3-3) notched the win after pitching seven innings for the Musketeers and striking out five. Eric Stiene (1-0, 0.00 ERA) came in for two innings of no-hit relief and did not allow a a run to keep his ERA spotless.
Jeff Schank (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after going 4.1 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.
Marco Caponi, Quincy Quintero and Wojciechowski each recorded two-hit games for the Bulldogs.
Saturday's game does not count towards the BIG EAST standings because it was a non-conference contest between XU and BU. However, these two teams meet again in conference action on April 17 for the first of three BIG EAST games at Butler.
The Musketeers close out the weekend Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against nationally-ranked Louisville. Live statistics and a subscription-based video feed will be provided by GoCards.com.
