LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Xavier's offense was shut down by No. 10 Louisville in an 8-1 loss on the diamond Friday night. The Musketeers put runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings, but were unable to plate a run until the ninth.
Sacrifice flies in the second and third innings spotted Louisville (19-6) a 2-0 lead, but the big damage from the Cards came in a five-run fourth. Xavier's starter Adam Hall was tagged for five runs on six hits and two hit batters in the inning. A third sacrifice fly in the sixth inning expanded U of L's lead to 8-0.
Xavier (12-12) finally broke through in the ninth inning. The Musketeers loaded the bases with Brian Bruening's walk, Chase Puente's looping single and another walk from Stephen Schoettmer. Michael Moore sent a fly ball to right field, scoring Bruening on the sacrifice fly for XU's lone run.
Hall drops to 3-1 on the season after giving up seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work. The Cards picked up one run on a pair of hits against Daniel Przeniczny, who tossed three innings. Greg Jackenwitz pitched the eighth for XU, allowing one hit in the frame.
Daniel Rizzie reached base three times for Xavier on a hit and two walks. Bruening and Schoettmer each went 1-for-3 and Bruening scored XU's run.
Kyle Funkhouser earned the victory for Louisville, improving to 5-1 on the seaon. Sutton Whiting led the Cardinals' offensive output with a hit, two walks, three stolen bases, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
The Musketeers return to the field on Saturday when they meet Butler at noon. XU and BU will play at Jim Patterson Stadium on U of L's campus.
