BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Xavier baseball team tallied 11 hits on the day but the Indiana Hoosiers' five-run sixth put the game out of reach as XU fell, 10-4, in Bloomington. Sophomore Drew Schmidt went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run as the Musketeers' number one hitter.

Xavier (6-12) started the scoring off quickly by putting up a run in the top of the first. Schmidt led off with a single and junior left fielder Steve Brown reached on an error by the pitcher. Junior right fielder Sean Farrell moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt and sophomore designated hitter Zac Richard grounded out to the second baseman, enabling Schmidt to score. XU held the early lead, 1-0.

Indiana (10-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the frame but the Musketeers answered back with two runs of their own in the second. Junior shortstop Jordan Conley singled to right field and senior catcher Dan Hayden's sac bunt moved Conley over to second. Junior third baseman Billy O'Conner's double scored Conley and junior center fielder Adam Pasono's single advanced O'Conner to third. Schmidt followed with his second single of the day and O'Conner came across home plate. After two complete innings, Xavier was ahead, 2-1.

The Hoosiers scored one run in each of the next two innings before the Musketeers got one back in the top of the fifth. Schmidt singled again but was caught stealing at second. Brown was walked and Farrell singled up the middle, putting Brown in scoring position. Richard doubled to left center and collected an RBI as Brown scored to tie the game at three runs apiece.

IU scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and then broke the game open in the sixth as the Hoosiers scored five more. Indiana held the 10-4 lead through the end of the game and came out on top by that margin.

Freshman righty Brian Muransky (0-2) took the loss for the Musketeers after striking out four while walking one over 5.1 innings of work.

Chris McCombs (1-0) notched the win for the Hoosiers as he struck out three XU batters while walking one in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Musketeers return to conference play this weekend as they travel to Amherst, Mass., to take on the UMass Minutemen for a three-game A-10 series beginning Friday, March 28. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
