CINCINNATI -- Thanks to seven innings of solid pitching from redshirt sophomore Tyler Koors and a five-run seventh inning, the Xavier baseball team defeated Temple 10-4 in the Atlantic 10 opener Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 15-8 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 while the Owls fell to 13-6 and 0-1 in the conference.
Koors pitched seven innings in the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. The right hander gave up four earned runs and fanned four Owl batters.
Senior first baseman Ben Thomas led the Musketeers offensively going 3-for-5. The lefty was just a triple shy of the cycle with a double in the bottom of the fourth, a single in the bottom of the seventh, and a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
Xavier trailed 3-0 after two innings but the Musketeers answered in the third. It was senior center fielder John McCambridge who got the Musketeers back into the ballgame with a two-run homer to left field. XU scored twice more in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Owls tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the fifth but XU would answer yet again. XU scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh beginning with an RBI by Phil Bauer on an error by the Temple shortstop.
Temple starter Ben White was tagged with the loss in 6.1 innings of action. With the loss, White fell to 3-3 on the year.
The Owls and Musketeers will play game two of the three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Hayden Field.
