HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Six singles in the ninth inning propelled the Xavier baseball team over Marshall, 13-6, Tuesday afternoon at MU's Kennedy Center. Three Musketeers had a multiple hit game, including senior team co-captain Billy O'Conner who went 3-for-5 on the day.
Sophomore Ben Thomas collected a game-high four RBI on the day, three of which came from his three-run bomb in the fifth frame.
Marshall (10-11) scored one run each in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. In the first frame, Victor Gomez's sac fly sent in Ben Jurevicius from third while a double from Nate Lape scored Adam Yeager in the third.
Xavier (11-6) kick started its offense in the top of the fifth with as Thomas blasted a three-run homer, his first career long ball, over the right field fence. O'Conner and freshman Matt Kleifges scored on the play as Thomas collected three RBI and gave Xavier its first lead of the day, 3-2.
The Herd got a run back on the bottom of the frame when Yeager scored on a Gomez single. With four innings remaining, the two squads were knotted a three runs apiece.
The Musketeers retook the lead in the seventh when junior Zac Richard was able to reach first on a fielding error by the short stop and another Herd error on the same play enables both Kleifges and senior Adam Pasono to make it home. Richard moved around to second on a passed ball and then he came across home as well on a ground out by Thomas. XU's three-run inning gave it the 6-3 lead.
MU was not going down without a fight and the Herd put together a three-run eighth to tie to contest at six runs each. After a single and a walk, MU's Josh Valle doubled to score both base runners and Valle scored on a sac fly to even the score heading into the ninth.
Xavier put together a string of six singles, including two from O'Conner, and was helped by two Marshall errors to blow open the game in the final inning, scoring seven runs. Richard's single to center field scored what would be the winning run as O'Conner touched home on the play. XU took the victory, 13-6, for its eighth non-conference win of the season.
