LEXINGTON, Ky. - XU battled hard against No. 24 Kentucky, but fell short in an 11-6 decision at Cliff Hagen Stadium. Centerfielder John McCambridge went 3-for-4 from the plate including a stolen base and two runs. With the win, the Cats improve to 16-5 while the Musketeers fall to 4-15 on the season.
The teams were almost even in hits, with Kentucky getting 13 while XU batted 12 hits. Xavier was right with the Wildcats until the sixth inning when Kentucky scored three runs and then added two more in the seventh.
Red-shirt senior Neil Lindgren started the Musketeers off on the right foot in the first inning, getting one hit and an RBI. Matt Kleifges batted two runners home and had a hit in the third. McCambridge shined in the fourth inning when he had a hit, a run and a stolen base. Bobby Freking added one of his three total hits in the eighth inning.
Sophomore Josh Deeg (1-1) took the loss for Xavier as he tossed two complete innings giving up three runs on three hits and struck out two while walking one. Starter junior Brian Muransky threw three and a third, giving up six runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking one. Sam Kidd (2-1) got the win for the Cats after tossing two full innings giving up one earned run.
Kentucky outfielder Chad Wright was 2-for-5, but those two hits would prove costly as they translated to runs. Shortstop Taylor Black also scored two runs for the Cats.
