LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Xavier baseball team scored early and had a strong combined pitching performance as they beat No. 19 Louisville, 4-1, in the finale of a three-game series at Patterson Stadium.
The victory was the second of the series for the Musketeers, who improve to 13-7 overall. Louisville dropped to 12-7 with the loss.
Starter Vinny Nittoli, along with relievers Nate Mutsch, Markus Kuykendoll and Seth Willoughby combined to allow nine hits. Nittoli was the winning pitcher for the Musketeers. He went five innings, giving up four hits and striking out five.
Kuykendoll worked his ninth scoreless inning in relief before handing the ball over to Willoughby who struck out two on his way to his fifth save of the season.
The Musketeers scored three runs in the first and one more in ninth inning.
John McCambridge started the game by drawing a walk and advanced to second on an error. He would come around to score on double to right center by Phil Bauer. Ryan Bellamy, who singled to third in the inning, would score on a ground out. Bauer scored on a ground out as well giving the Musketeers an early lead.
Louisville cut into the Musketeers' lead in the seventh scoring one run. Drew Haynes singled and would later scored from third base on an single by Stewart Ijames.
Xavier returns to Cincinnati to face Wright State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field.
