CINCINNATI - Xavier University used a five-run sixth inning to propel its way past visiting Youngstown State. Junior Chris Lozan blasted a three-run home run to cap the five-run sixth inning for the Musketeers en route to the 7-2 victory. XU earned its first home win of the season and now stands at 6-13 overall, while Youngstown State drops to 5-10 on the year.

XU jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning as junior Adam Lipski ran the first and third play to perfection and allowed Neil Lindgren to take home to put Xavier up 1-0 early. Youngstown State would respond in the top of the fifth as back-to-back singles allowed the Penguins to push a run across and knot the score at 1-1.

The Musketeers would go ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth as XU exploded for five runs in the inning. Xavier would take advantage of four walks in the inning including one to Jordan Wolf, which plated the first run of the frame and gave the blue and white the lead for good. After a sacrifice fly by Sean Brewer that scored Lindgren, Lozan stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a shot over the left field fence to push the XU advantage to 6-1.

XU would plate another run in the bottom of the seventh after a single by Matt Waskerwitz was followed with a double by Robbie Kelley to put runners at second and third with no outs. Lindgren earned his eighth RBI of the season by delivering a long fly ball to left that allowed Waskerwitz to score and extend the Musketeer advantage to 7-1. A home run by YSU in the top of the eighth would cap the scoring and leave XU with the 7-2 victory.

Xavier was outhit in the contest 8-6 but managed to strand only two runners on the base paths compared to Youngstown State leaving 10 runners on base. The Musketeers also drew eight walks on the afternoon, while YSU drew only five.



Lozan led the XU offense as the junior finished 2-for-3 at the plate with the key home run and three RBIs. He was also the only Musketeer to record two hits on the afternoon. Sean Brewer, Adam Lipski, Matt Waskerwitz and Robbie Kelley each ended the game 1-for-3 at the plate with Kelley earning the only other extra base hit for XU with his double in the seventh. Junior Jordan Wolf finished the day with two stolen bases, which led the team.

Junior Dan Graham picked up his second win of the season as the righty threw six solid innings, giving up one unearned run on six hits and striking out three. Seniors Matt Lucas and Steve Sakosits came in to close the door and finished out the remaining three innings only allowing one run on two hits.

The Musketeers will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 21 as they travel across town to take on rival Cincinnati. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm at UC Baseball Stadium. Junior right-hander Mark Janszen figures to get the nod on the mound for XU.
