LOUISVILLE -- It was an offensive slugfest between Xavier and No. 19 Louisville, but in the end XU prevailed 11-9 and tied a school record with its ninth consecutive win. With the victory, the Musketeers improved to 12-6 on the season while UofL dropped to 11-6.
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Koors earned the win in six innings of action to improve to 2-1 on the season. The right hander allowed nine hits and gave up just one double on the day. Sophomore right hander Seth Willoughby earned his fourth save in two-thirds of an inning of work.
The Musketeers came out of the gate swinging in the top of the first and took a 4-0 lead thanks to an RBI base hit by senior Phil Bauer followed by a two-RBI single by freshman Brian Bruening and a run-scoring groundout by Patrick Paligraf.
XU tacked on three more in the top of the third but the Cardinals answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning that cut the XU lead to 7-3.
The Musketeers extended their lead to 11- 7 in the top of the ninth but the Cards battled to within two (11-9) in the bottom of the inning. Williougby was up to the challenge, however, getting two straight outs to clinch the win.
Xavier returns to action Saturday in game two of the three game stand at Louisville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
