CINCINNATI- The Xavier baseball team opened its home season with a 1-0 victory over the Toledo Rockets. Xavier improved to 5-11 for the season and snapped a four-game losing streak with the win on Friday.
Vinny Nittoli pitched six innings of shut-out baseball, allowing only three hits while fanning four Toledo batters. Junior Seth Willoughby earned his fourth save of the year as he had a 1-2-3 ninth inning while striking out two.
Daniel Rod had two of the Musketeers hits and knocked in what would be the winning run in the third inning. Michael Moore reached by an error to start off the inning then Mark Elwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Moore. Moore reached third on an error during a pick-off attempt. Rod hit a line drive to right field to get the game's only RBI.
Michael Hamann threw seven innings for Toledo, allowing one unearned run and struck out seven.
The Musketeers face Toledo Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18, to conclude their opening weekend at Hayden Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
