MASON, Ohio -- Senior Brian Muransky pitched six innings one one-hit baseball and fanned 11 Miami (Ohio) batters as he led Xavier to a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Prasco Park. With the win, the Musketeers extended their win streak to eight straight games and improved to 10-6 on the season. Sophomore Seth Willoughby earned his third save of the season in the win.
Muransky's 11 strikeouts was the most by a Musketeer pitcher this season. The senior right hander improved to 2-0 in six shutout innings of action Tuesday.
Willoughby did his part offensively as well as on the mound as he went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one run.
RedHawk (5-10) starter Seth Varner fell to 0-1 on the season as he was tagged with the loss.
The Musketeers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Willoughby led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by freshman first baseman Brian Bruening, and came home on a well place sacrifice fly by Ryan Bellamy.
Sophomore Patrick Paligraf extended the XU lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to left field, his third homer of the season.
The Musketeers added insurance in the fourth when Bruening brought home Phil Bauer with a groundout to second base.
Miami added two runs of its own in the top of the seventh, but strong pitching by sophomore Markus Kuyendoll in the eighth and Willoughby in the ninth sealed the win for the Musketeers.
XU will return to Prasco Park Wednesday as they face Youngstown State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
