CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team split its doubleheader Tuesday, March 11, at No. 23 Louisville, winning the first game, 9-4, and dropping the second, 13-3, at U of L's Jim Patterson Stadium. The Musketeers are now 2-6 overall while the Cardinals move to 6-4 for the season.

 

After a scoreless first inning, Xavier exploded with five runs in the top of the second. Junior right fielder Jack Bonnikson singled up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice ground out by junior shortstop Jordan Conley. Junior catcher Billy O'Conner singled to center field, scoring Bonnikson, and sophomore second baseman Drew Schimdt singled through the right side to advance O'Conner. Both runners moved over a base as junior center fielder Adam Pasono singled and two scored when freshman third baseman John McCambridge singled to right field. 

 

The Cards replaced starting pitcher Zach Pitts with Justin Marks and McCambridge stole second. Senior first baseman Robbie Kelley reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and then advanced to second as Pasono and McCambridge came across the plate. The Musketeers took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.


 

 

 

Louisville got one run back in the bottom of the third as Derrick Alfonso led off the frame with a home run over the left field wall. But after Josh Richmond was caught stealing, Phil Wunderlich hit into a double play to close out the inning.

 

After U of L righty Thomas Royse replaced Marks on the mound, Xavier put up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Junior left fielder Steve Brown singled to right field and then advanced to second on the throw. Kelley reached first on an error by the Cardinal first baseman and sophomore designated hitter Zac Richard sent all runners home with a long ball over the right field fence, his third home run of the season. XU headed into the seventh inning stretch with an 8-1 lead.

 

XU's right handed pitcher junior Brett Greenwell relieved starter righty senior Mike Creevy to open the bottom of the seventh. The Cards notched two more runs in the inning after Richmond reached on a fielder's choice and Nate Holland homered to right field. At the end of the frame, Xavier still held a commanding 8-3 lead.

 

In the bottom of the eighth, U of L's Justin McClanahan doubled down the left line and was followed by Chris Dominguez with a single to the shortstop. McClanahan was sent home when Andrew Clark singled to right field, scoring the Cards' only run of the inning. The Musketeers held on to the four-run advantage, 8-4.

 

Xavier scored one more run in the ninth when Richard singled to left and then Conley singled to right. Freshman Phil Bauer entered the game, replacing Richard at second as a pinch runner. O'Conner notched an RBI with his single to left center as Bauer made it home. After eight and a half innings of play, Xavier held the 9-4 lead, which would prove to be the final score of the first game.

 

Creevy (2-0) picked up the win for the Musketeers, striking out four batters while walking three and allowing two earned runs in six innings of work. Pitts (2-1) took the loss for the Cards, striking out two while walking none and allowing three earned runs. A Save was credited to XU reliever Greenwell (1).

In the second game, Louisville led off the bottom of the first with three straight hits and scored three runs as U of L took the early lead, 3-0.

 

Xavier got one run back in each of the first two innings as a double by Richard put him in scoring position in the top of the second. The next two Musketeer batters were put out but senior catcher Tyler Aholt singled to the third baseman, allowing Richard to come across. In the third, Pasono blasted a led-off home run over the right field wall, his first of the year, for XU's second run of the game. Xavier pulled to within one, 3-2.

 

Louisville scored another run in the bottom of the third after Clark singled to right and a double to left by Dominguez brought him home. In the top of the fourth, Xavier got one back as Bonnikson was walked and Conley singled to right. Schmidt then reached on an error, which allowed Bonnikson to cross home plate.

 

U of L scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and then had a three-run fifth to take the 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Dominguez collected an RBI as Clark scored followed by a three-run home run by Jeff Arnold. After six frames, Louisville led the contest, 12-3.

 

In the bottom of the eighth, Louisville got one more run after a Cardinal double and single. The score after eight innings had U of L in the lead, 13-3, which would prove to be the final margin.

 

Freshman right handed pitcher Brian Muransky (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after striking out five and walking two during five innings of work. B.J. Rosenberg got the win for the Cardinals as he struck out three and walked one in four innings of action.

 

Up next for Xavier is a neutral site game versus Youngstown State Wednesday, March 12, which will be play at the University of Cincinnati's field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
