LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. -- The Musketeers earned their second win in a row in commanding fashion with a 12-0 drubbing of Mount St. Mary's Monday afternoon. Senior Ben Thomas earned his first win of the season as XU improved to 5-6 overall.
The Musketeers scored one run in the bottom of the first but it was in the second inning that they did the most damage. Xavier scored nine runs in the second with Ryan Bellamy crossing the plate on an RBI single by third baseman Patrick Paligraf. That opened the floodgates as redshirt sophomore Mark Elwell drove in two runs with a double and crossed the plate himself on the way to a 2-of-3, three-RBI day.
Leading 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth Elwell struck again with an RBI single which plated one of XU's two runs in the inning.
Thomas was strong on the mound, throwing four innings of shutout baseball. Redshirt junior Nate Mutsch followed with three shutout innings, and freshman Scott Klever closed out the final two innings without allowing a run.
Xavier will take Tuesday off before facing Toledo on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
