WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Xavier baseball team improved to 4-6 on the season as it rolled over Yale 17-6 Sunday afternoon in the RussMatt Invitational. Redshirt freshman Vinny Nittoli picked up his first win of the season in six innings of action while Yale starter Pat Ludwig was tagged with the loss.
The Musketeers scored early and often against the Bulldogs. XU plated a single run in the first, second, and fourth innings before opening the floodgates in the fifth.
The Musketeers scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to take an 11-0 lead. Freshman right fielder Brian Bruening led off the inning with a single and crossed the plate when the next batter, catcher Ryan Bellamy, hit a two-run home run to begin the eight-run rally.
XU added five more in the top of the sixth with four runs coming off of a grand-slam homer from third baseman Patrick Paligraf.
The Musketeers will look for their second straight win Monday as they face Mount Saint Mary's at 3 p.m.
