March 6, 2013
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Xavier (3-7) dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 7 Kentucky (11-1) at Cliff Hagan Stadium on UK's campus Wednesday evening. Mark Elwell finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and run scored to continue his torrid pace over the last week.
Elwell improved to 10-for-16 (.625) in the last four games. He has also scored four runs and driven in four RBIs over the same span. Derek Hasenbeck chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI for the Musketeers on Wednesday evening.
UK opened a one-run lead in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats used back-to-back singles and a sac fly to plate the first run of the game.
Xavier took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Mark Elwell singled to open the inning and was thrown out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brian Bruening. However, Vinny Nittoli and Patrick Paligraf delivered consecutive doubles to plate the two runs.
Kentucky regained the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits and a walk. Xavier starter Scott Klever gave up a single to start the inning and appeared to be out of trouble after retiring the next two hitters. Klever then gave up a walk, single and double, allowing the two runs to score.
UK tacked on one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 5-2. XU responded with one run in the top of the eighth. Elwell drew a one-out walk and Derek Hasenbeck drove him in with a two-out double to right field.
Paligraf opened the ninth inning with a walk before being throw out on a fielder's choice to the third baseman by Stephen Schoettmer. Joe Forney singled to put runners at first and second, but the next two Musketeers were retired on foul out and a strikeout to end the threat.
Klever (1-1) allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits and four walks in five innings of work. Jacob Bodner, Jarred Marks, Zach Johnson, Przenciczny and Vice all made appearances on the mound for the Musketeers.
Bruening's 21-game hitting streak came to an end with a 0-for-4 performance. Bruening's streak covered his final 12 games of 2012 and covered the first nine games this season.
Kyle Cody (1-0) picked up the win for UK, throwing five innings of two-run ball. Cody gave up four hits and struck out three. Trevor Gott worked the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
Xavier opens a three-game series at Middle Tennessee on Friday with a scheduled 3 p.m. start time.
