Freshman Patrick Paligraf's sac bunt scored XU's lone run in the fifth

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In the second of a three-game series, the Xavier baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision at Wake Forest Saturday evening at WF Baseball Park. The Demon Deacons out-hit the Musketeers, 9-6, as they improve to 5-6 on the season while XU falls to 1-8 overall.
Wake Forest went ahead, 2-0, after scoring one run in both the first and third innings. Xavier got a run back in the fifth to cut the Wake lead to one, 2-1. Junior Ben Thomas led off with a single through the left side and junior Ryan Bellamy's sacrifice bunt moved him over to second. Lindgren's base hit to left center got Thomas on third and Paligraf used the second sac bunt of the inning to bring home Thomas.
The Demon Deacons answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Wake Forest took the contest by the final margin of 6-1.
Junior Tommy Shirley (0-2) took the loss for the Musketeers as he tossed 4.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out a game-high seven batters, one off his career high, and walked three. Sophomore Josh Deeg finished the game for XU, putting in 3.1 innings of work.
Tim Cooney (2-0) took the win for the Demon Deacons after 7.2 innings on the mound. He gave up one run on six hits and struck out four while walking none.
Steven Brooks led the Deacs, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Xavier and Wake Forest close out their series Sunday, March 7 with a 1 p.m. start at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
