RALEIGH, N.C. - A ninth-inning rally fell just short as the Xavier baseball team dropped a 10-7 decision at NC State Thursday evening. The two teams picked up the game after both had their mid-week contests cancelled.
The Musketeers were led by senior Bobby Freking who went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a three-run long ball in the fifth, with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Ryan Bellamy also had a multiple hit day, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
NC State (7-1) jumped out early on the Musketeers, scoring three runs in the first two innings off a total of four hits. Neither team produced in the third or fourth and the score remained 3-0 in favor of NCS heading into the fifth inning.
Xavier (1-6) battled back, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at three-all. Freshman Seth Willoughby was walked and made it to second when senior Drew Schmidt singled through the right side. With runners at first and second, Freking blasted out a three-run homer, his second home run of the season, to even the score.
The Wolfpack used a two-run fifth to retake the lead, 5-3, and then scored one more in the seventh. NC State was able to build a sizable margin in the bottom of the eighth with a grand slam to left center, giving the Pack the 10-3 advantage.
In the top of the ninth, the Musketeers rallied as Freking connected on a two-out single to center and was moved over to second on a single from junior Ben Thomas. Bellamy loaded the bases with his hit to right field and Freking was walked in as redshirt senior Neil Lindgren took a base on balls. Freshman Daniel Rod came up big with a three-RBI double to left that cleared the bases but that would be the end of the rally as NC State took the contest, 10-7.
Freshman Markus Kuykendoll (0-1) took the loss Xavier in his first collegiate start and third appearance this season. He gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out one while walking one. Junior Brian Muransky out in three innings of work, giving up four runs and striking out three, while redshirt freshman Alex Vice faced one batter in the eighth. Redshirt sophomore Josh Murphy tossed two-thirds of an inning to close out the game for XU.
Cory Mazzoni (2-0) got the win for NC State after throwing 5.2 innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out seven while walking four.
NC State was led by Andrew Ciencin with four hits, including the grand slam in the eighth, six RBI and two runs scored.
The Musketeers return to action Friday, March 5 as they open a three-game series at Wake Forest. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
