March 2, 2009
CHARLESTON, S.C. - After weather canceled this past weekend's series, the Xavier baseball team put together an offensive showing Monday afternoon at Charleston Southern, winning its game at Buccaneer Ballpark, 11-4. Five Musketeers had multiple hit games as the team tallied 16 hits in the contest, including senior Billy O'Conner who went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs.
Charleston Southern (3-3) got the scoring started early, putting up a run in the bottom of the first. Scotty Radabaugh singled, advanced on a balk and then stole third. He was able to score when interference was called on the third baseman to put CSU up one, 1-0.
Xavier (3-1) threatened in the top of the second after loading the bases with three straight singles. With one out, the Musketeers could not convert as the Buccaneers turned a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
XU did answer in the top of the third as senior Adam Pasono led off with a home run to put Xavier on the board. The scored remained knotted at one apiece until the top of the fifth.
The Musketeers added five runs in the fifth as O'Conner led off the frame with a single and was moved around to second when Pasono was subsequently walked. With runners on first and second, CSU went to the bullpen and Corey Deighan relieved Eric McGough on the mound.
Sophomore John McCambridge then singled to load the bases and junior Drew Schmidt was hit by a pitch to send in O'Conner. Senior Steve Brown took a base on balls, walking in Pasono and junior Zac Richard picked up his first hit of the day and an RBI with his single that allowed McCambridge to cross. Senior Sean Farrell's single sent both Schmidt and Brown home and Xavier took the 6-1 lead to close out the frame.
The Buccaneers got a run back in the seventh when Mark Perry singled followed by a double by Jake Cox. Perry was able to come around and score on the play, cutting Xavier's lead to four, 6-2.
Xavier started off the eighth inning with a single from O'Conner and Pasono was hit by a pitch. O'Conner stole third, putting runners at first and third, and McCambridge was hit by a pitch as well to load the bases. Schmidt and Brown hit back-to-back singles, scoring two, and Richard hit into a double play but McCambridge was able to come across for the Musketeers third run of the frame. XU stretched its lead out to seven, 9-2.
Charleston Southern led off the bottom of the eighth with consecutive singles and the runners advanced when Tyler Thornburg grounded out to the pitcher. Tom Burkett collected two RBI with his double, pulling the Buccaneers to within five, 9-4. The Musketeers were able to get out of the inning with no more damage as the next two batters went down.
Senior Jordan Conley opened the final inning with a single and then stole second. O'Conner singled as well and advanced to second on the throw as Conley was put out at third. Pasono doubled, scoring O'Conner, and was then sent home on a single from McCambridge to wrap up XU's offensive effort for the day.
Junior lefty Danny Rosenbaum (1-0) was credited with the win for the Musketeers. He tossed four complete innings giving up one unearned run on two hits while striking out three and walking two. Freshman Nathan Mutsch got in two innings of work while sophomore Tom Shirley, freshman Tyler Koors and senior Brett Greenwell each contributed an inning as well.
McGlough (0-1) took the loss for the Buccaneers. He threw four innings giving up three runs while striking out none and walking two.
The Musketeers return to action tomorrow evening with a 5 p.m. match-up with College of Charleston.
