Baseball Falls to No. 6/7 Vanderbilt, 17-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In its last game of the Music City Invitational, the Xavier baseball team fell to host No. 6/7 Vanderbilt Commodores, 17-3. Senior catcher Dan Hayden hit a home run over the left center wall to tally two RBIs in the fifth for the Musketeers.
Vanderbilt (5-2) put up three runs in the bottom of the first as David Macias scored on a balk and Andrew Giobbi's sacrifice fly earned him an RBI. The third run came Curt Casali singled to center, scoring Dominic de la Osa.
In the third, Jonathan White led off with a home run to right field and Brian Harris' single scored Casali but Steven Liddle was put out at home on throw. Vandy took the 5-0 lead into the fourth.
The `Dores exploded with an eight-run fourth, including four singles and three doubles, to expand their lead to 13-0.
In the top of the fifth, Xavier (1-5) got two runs back when junior right field Jack Bonnikson singled to right and Hayden homered to left center for two RBIs. At the end of the frame, Vanderbilt led, 13-2.
At the bottom of the frame, Liddle tripled to left center, scoring White for VU, and then Harris doubled to send in Liddle to notch two more runs for the Commodores. Vandy led 15-2 heading into the top of the sixth.
Vanderbilt got one more run in both the sixth and seventh inning.
Xavier scored a run in the top of the eighth after junior third baseman Billy O'Conner reached on a VU error. Freshman Phil Bauer pinch hit for sophomore Zac Richard and singled to right field, sending O'Conner across the plate. XU trailed, 17-3, following the frame which would prove to be the final score.
