Xavier Baseball Drops First Game Of The Riverview Inn Classic To Bradley, 15-5

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. - Xavier dropped a 15-5 decision to Bradley Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Riverview Inn Classic. The Musketeers fell to 4-3 on the year and Bradley improved to 6-1.
Xavier scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning after Vinny Nittoli knocked an RBI single through the left side, scoring Tres Eberhardt from second. Bradley answered in their half of the second inning with Tyler Leffler reaching home on a fielder's choice.
The Braves took over the lead in the top of the fourth when Evan Gruener singled to left field and brought home Leffler for the second time on the afternoon. Bradley picked up another score in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Adam Hall walked Leffler and Smith scored from third giving Bradley a 3-1 lead.
XU rallied in its half of the fifth starting with a one-out single by Eberhardt, who then stole second base to get into scoring position. After Joe Forney walked, Derek Hasenbeck reached safely due to a fielding error by Elliot Ashbeck and Eberhardt scored the unearned run. With runners on first and third, Nittoli belted his first home run of the season to left field giving Xavier the lead, 5-3.
Bradley took over for good in the bottom of the seventh. The Braves notched four runs off of three hits, including a Chris Godinez double that brought home Isaac Smith and Ashbeck. The Braves went on to score three more runs in the eighth and five runs in the ninth to take the first game from the Musketeers.
Hall (2-0) started for the Musketeers and finished with five innings pitched, giving up four hits, four walks and three earned runs in the no decision. Alex Westrick (0-1) picked up the loss after going one inning and giving up four hits.
Nittoli led the Musketeers at the plate going 3-for-3, including four RBIs and a home run. Eberhardt had a solid 1-for-3 effort with two walks and two runs scored. Stephen Schoettmer was the other Musketeer with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4.
Leffler led the Braves at the plate and on the base path with three hits, three walks and five runs. Cameron Roegner (1-0) picked up the win after pitching 1.1 innings, giving up one hit.
Xavier takes on the Dayton Flyers Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. (ET), in Clarksville, Tenn.
