LEXINGTON, Ky. - In the opening game of a doubleheader day for Xavier, the Musketeers used a powerful offensive performance to run past Oakland, 14-9. Every starter for the Blue and White recorded a hit in the game with five Musketeers earning multiple-hits on the afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The victory gives XU its first victory of the season and moves the Musketeers to 1-6 on the season, while Oakland drops to 3-3 overall.
After the Grizzlies tied the score at 1-1 in the next half inning, XU responded with its largest run total in an inning so far this season. The Musketeers posted six runs on four hits, while Xavier capitalized on three bases-loaded situations in the frame. A walk and two singles set up the first situation for sophomore Sean Farrell. Farrell delivered a two-run single to left and gave XU a 3-1 advantage but the Blue and White would not stop there. Kelley was hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior Matt Waskerwitz. Waskerwitz reached on a fielder's choice to plate Neil Lindgren before Schmidt drew a walk to load the bases for the third time. Senior Andy Zellers came off the bench to pinch-hit and delivered a three-run double to center to clear the bases and round out the scoring.
Xavier would score another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to extend its lead to 10-1 before the Oakland bats came alive in the sixth.
The Musketeer pitching staff would be tested in the sixth as the Grizzlies put up and eight-spot to climb back into the game at 10-9. OU would record seven of its 12 hits in the game during the inning and batted around the order.
After the rough inning, XU would respond and help the pitching staff by plating four more runs to put it out of reach. One run in the seventh took advantage of a OU error and three more in the eighth also came as a result of an Oakland miscue.
Freshman Zac Richard earned his first win of his career and now stands at 1-1 on the season. Richard finished the day with four strikeouts. Sophomore Brett Greenwell would enter the game and close the door to pick up his first save of the season. Greenwell threw the final two innings and allowed only two hits.
Seniors Andy Zellers and Matt Waskerwitz would be the key to the XU offense as each tallied four RBIs in the game. Zellers finished 1-for-3 on the day with a double and those four RBIs, while Waskerwitz was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Sophomores Neil Lindgren and Sean Farrell would tie for team-high honors with three hits each and both finished 3-for-5 on the afternoon. The three hits and three RBIs by Farrell established a new career high for him and Waskerwitz also set a new career high with the four RBIs.
The Musketeers face host Kentucky at 4:00 pm. XU's Charlie Leesman will get the start and face the Wildcats' Clint Tilford in the last game of the evening.
