BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --A walk-off RBI single by UAB first baseman was the deciding factor as Xavier dropped a 7-6 decision to the Blazers Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 2-4 on the season while the Blazers improved to 4-3.
Ben Bullard earned the win for UAB in 4.1 innings of action. He gave up four hits and one earned run in the win. Sophomore Seth Willoughby was tagged with the loss. The Xavier right hander word two-thirds of an inning and gave up three hits and one earned run.
Freshman Brian Bruening had a strong showing offensively as he went 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored. XU seniors John McCambridge and Phil Bauer, and sophomore Patrick Paligraf each went 2-for-4 on the day.
Xavier jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as McCambrige's lead-off triple set up an RBI sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Ben Thomas. XU added two more in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers cut the XU lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third but the Musketeers rebounded. In the top of the fifth inning Bruening crossed the plate thanks to a RBI double by Paligraf. Ryan Bellamy brought home the second run of the inning with a single to center and gave the Musketeers a 5-2 lead.
The Blazers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5 but XU pulled away by one in the top of the eighth. The Blazers were able to defend their home turf though, scoring once in the eighth and then taking the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Xavier will host its first home game of the 2011 season Wednesday, March 2 as the Musketeers welcome Indiana to Hayden Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
