CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Xavier baseball team fell to 1-3 on the season after a tough 7-2 loss to Connecticut Friday afternoon at the Cougar Challenge in Charleston, S.C. UConn improved to 2-2 with the win.
Xavier took an early lead but couldn't overcome two big innings by the Huskies and a strong performance by UConn starter Brian Ward, who earned the win in seven innings of four-hit baseball.
Redshirt-sophomore Vinny Nittoli fell to 0-2 on the season as he was pegged with the loss in 3.1 innings. Freshman Alex Westrick pitched 3.2 innings and gave up two hits while Alex Vice pitched one inning.
The Musketeers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Derek Hasenbeck led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Partick Paligraf. He scored on a Joey Noble triple to center to give the Musketeers a 1-0 edge. Noble came home on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
UConn battled back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Huskies added four more in the bottom of the fourth with two runs coming off of Eric Yavarone's two-run home run.
Xavier will continue play at the Cougar Classic Saturday as they face Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island at 1 p.m.
