BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Xavier (1-4) scored runs in the first and fourth innings but couldn't hold off UAB (4-3) in a 4-2 loss to the Blazers. Derek Hasenbeck and Patrick Paligraf each drove in runs for the Musketeers.
UAB responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning of off Xavier starter Jon Richard. The Blazers sent eight batters to the plate, who connected on three hits and a sac fly.
Vinny Nittoli gave the Musketeers a runner in fourth inning with a single to center field. Paligraf, the next batter, cracked a double to right center to score Nittoli and knot the score at two.
The Blazers got to Richard again in the sixth inning, plating two runs on two hits and an error. Richard's night ended after six innings on the mound. The senior gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits. He finished with two strikeouts and two walks, while dropping to 0-1 on the season.
UAB's James Naile and Cameron Rose shut the door on XU. Naile (2-0) went eight innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on six hits and registered six strikeouts. Rose picked up the save after retiring the side in the top of the ninth.
Brian Bruening singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to 17-consecutive games.
The series finale between Xavier and UAB is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on Sunday at Young Memorial Field.
