KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Xavier baseball team dropped a heart-breaker Saturday evening as Tennessee used a two-RBI walk-off single to slip past the Musketeers, 7-6, in the second of three games at UT's Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Vols scored three in the ninth inning to overcome the Musketeers in the last frame.

The Musketeers were led by juniors Ben Thomas and Phil Bauer with three hits apiece on the day as XU outhit UT, 14-9. Senior Bobby Freking was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

Xavier (0-2) opened the game with a two-run first inning as senior Drew Schmidt was walked and moved into scoring position on a single from Thomas. Freking singled to left, scoring Schmidt and moving Thomas to second. Junior Ryan Bellamy picked up an RBI in the inning as well when Thomas scored on his single.

The Musketeers got another run in the second after Bauer doubled to lead off the frame. He was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt freshman Mark Elwell and junior John McCambridge followed with a ground out to second, allowing Bauer to cross home. XU held the 3-0 lead after two and a half frames.

Tennessee (2-0) cut into the Musketeers advantage, putting up two runs in the bottom of the third. With runners at second and third, UT's Kayyan Norfork grounded out to score the Vols' first run and P.J. Polk doubled in the second run of the frame. Xavier still held a 3-2 advantage after three complete.

With two outs in the fourth inning, McCambridge squeezed out a bunt single to get on base. Schmidt followed with a double to right center and McCambridge turned on the jets, making it around to home to stretch XU's lead to two, 4-2.



Thomas used a first-pitch single to get on base in the fifth and then moved around to second on a wild pitch. With a full count, Freking blasted a ball over the left field fence for two RBI, extending the Musketeer advantage to four, 6-2.

The Vols put another run up in the sixth and one more in the seventh to pull within two of the Musketeers, 6-4. Tennessee came up big in the bottom of the ninth, putting up three runs on three hits including the game-winning single from Cody Stubbs as the Vols won the contest, 7-6.

Redshirt freshman Alex Vice (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after tossing two innings, giving up three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one. Junior Tommy Shirley started the game for XU and put in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out four while walking one. Junior Brian Muransky threw two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking two while giving up one run and redshirt sophomore Shane Liska closed out the game.

Will Locante (1-0) got the win for the Volunteers after tossing the final inning of the game.

The Musketeers and Volunteers return to action Sunday afternoon as they close out their three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
